Bluebird Tapestry

by: CHERY SAVAGE

I just thought you might like to see the finished bead pattern that I made. The piece is approximately 9.5" x 13.5", and I used over 30,000 beads.

PEACOCK IN INDIA - HINGED PURSE

LINING

You may choose to make your lining of silk, light weight UltraSuede, polyester or even a beautiful scarf that compliments the colors in your purse. Lay the completed beadwork on your lining and draw around it to make the lining pattern. Add seam allowance and stitch the lining slightly smaller than the purse: Trim the seams and overcast them or make French seams. Turn the lining so the seams are on the inside next to the beads. Baste the lining to the top of the beadwork. Slide the top of the purse in the channel on the inside of the frame. Baste the beadwork in place by sewing through the beadwork and over the top of the frame. You will not need many stitches just enough to hold it in place while you attach the frame permanently.

ATTACHING FRAME

You will be sewing through both the beadwork and the lining. From the inside of the purse come up through a bead and through the first hole in the frame. Go through a decorative bead and back down through the same hold in the frame.

Note: I didn't do that. I came up one hole in the frame and back down the hole next to it. I did this cause I attached the bead work first. I used the gapes in the frame holes for attaching my lining. - - - - < gapes left after attaching beadwork.

Come up through the beadwork again and go through the second hole in the frame add a bead and go back through the second hole. Continue until you have gone through every hole.

Tie off your thread and repeat the process on the second side.

Note: My thread shows in the inside of the purse on top of my lining.

SOME FACTS ON THE PURSE...

I bought the frame at Straw Into Gold in Berkeley, CA but they are sadly out of business. FireMountainGems.com has some nice purse frames. They cost somewhere around $15.00. The frame measures 3 1/2. I bought my purse chain at Straw Into Gold which like I said is out of business. I can't say where to purchase this chain now. I bought my heavy wedding satin lining at JoAnn's Craft. Also I have a thin interfacing between the lining and the beadwork so help protect the glass beads during use. The purse measures 9 inches, this includes the longest strand of the fringe. Just the beadwork measures just short of 4 1/2 inches.

The purse can hold comfortably (without damage to beads) a tube of lipstick, a credit card, a twenty dollar bill, Driver's license Proof Of Insurance card and a small comb. Not a purse for everyday but what a great evening bag.

When you wear it over your shoulder and walk, the fringe gently dances and sways changing the way the light reflects from the beads so it can be a very noticable item at times. On your way to the bathroom you can get stopped a number of times as hands grab your arm to stop you so they can view your purse. It's fun.

The beadworking didn't take me long at all. I had all four peacocks done within 60 hours. You can say I am obsessive beader on a project like this. I spend 8 to 10 hours a day beading my project. No housework gets done. I do take long periods of time between projects.

The three years or so that it took to complete it was all in the waiting for information on how to attach the frame to it. Since I was changing the top of the purse, I didn't know how to bead it or shape it so it would fit well in the frame. I finally got that info in a book by Suzanne Cooper called Then & Again and it was another 6 days and my purse was completed.

I was surprised at how long that twisted fringe took me to do but as I look at "our" little purse, I sure am glad I put in the time. When you pay attention to the detailed instructions you have in your book, the twisted fringe is easy and it does not come out and you don't need to tie it in anyway. Wonderful magic you have when you created this unusual fringe.
